Fall is calling my name. Not because I’m into pumpkin spice…that shit drives me nuts. But I love every other stereotypical fall thing. Crunchy leaves, holding hot beverages while cozied into a sweater, upstate cabin stays & hikes with the hubs and Speedy (check out the amazing cabin we stayed in last year here), foods that you can let simmer all day to keep your place warm. I mean, I could fill an entire post with all of the ways I’m looking forward to the new season.
Even though we’re still in summer, I’ve been making a few updates to our apartment decor to make it feel more cozy. That being said, I also came back from LA so full of Cali vibes that I think some of that played into the updates I’ve made, too. I think I’m finally finding that balance of Midwest charm, NYC chic, and chill LA vibes. Scroll through to check out the updates. I put links to most of the pieces, too, if you feel like doing some updating yourself!
I wanted to add lots of textures, as well as separate our sleeping space from my working space. We used to have a huge rug that covered nearly the entire room. By using two smaller rugs, one under the bed and another under the desk, I was able to create more of that separation.
Updates other than the rug include the printed curtains, the addition of lots of plants with midcentury modern-style planters, and a cozy throw & fur for the bed. I also added some functional little accessories for our nightstands. Our go-to stack of books, a woven sisal basket to put things like hand cream, chapstick, etc., and a little tray to put my rings in. I’m in love with the night stand on my side, which is the beautiful carved wood one.

I created a cute little corner next to my desk to keep me inspired while working. Nothing worse than looking up to a blank white wall. I got a bunch of accessories to secure my goal of becoming a successful plant mama, and a distressed decorative ladder that doubles as storage for extra throw blankets.

Our living area has to meet a lot of requirements. It’s got to be a lounging space for reading and watching TV, it’s got to be a dining area, and it’s also got to store important paperwork, as well as house all of the books and knick knacks we love so much. To make a basic storage shelf more fun, I’ve decoratively displayed some of our favorite books. I also am building out the decorative pieces I’ve topped the shelf with. I love this vintage globe I found (thank you NYC trash day) and the candelabra looks so pretty unlit, but when it’s lit during the evening, it’s MAGICAL.
Being people who love to cook, we’ve had to be creative about storing some of our favorite specialty cooking items. Our kitchen is galley style, so there’s not a ton of space to decorate. But the window nook is a spot where I’ve added some flair and simultaneously stored our pizza stone. I use it as a decorative tray (if you look closely, you can see that it says ‘Love This Kitchen’ on it <3) for whatever fresh flowers I grab a Trader Joe’s for the week. I also keep my succulents here, as they like a good amount of light. I think the sheer curtain makes the light look so pretty in this room. Fun fact–I hemmed this curtain by hand! And I think my favorite feature of this little nook is the antique kitchen timer we found at a local shop. It still works!
