“It may be cold outside, but it’s 80 degrees upstairs,” read the sign I passed while stepping into Bar Gonzo, Hell’s Kitchen’s newest 70s-themed lounge and bar devoted to reverent excess, for birthday drinks with friends. Having a penchant for anything disco-era, I was excited to check out the decor and cocktails–I wasn’t disappointed.
A luxe interior with a glowing staircase led up to a closed rooftop bar that was warm and had a relaxed, almost tropical vibe that made for a perfect spot to escape the brutal winter weather. And then came the cocktails. As my one birthday wish, I asked everyone to let me taste their drink so I could try as many as possible. (I mean, hey, if you’re gonna do your birthday…) They were all great, with subtle flavors, and none were too sweet. One of my biggest pet peeves with all of these “craft cocktail” bars popping up is that the drinks are one note and definitely not craft. Bar Gonzo is not one of these bars. Take note, all other craft cocktail bars in NYC.
I can’t wait to go back in the summer when the rooftop will be completely open air. But in the meantime, I’ll be frequenting this spot for happy hour to pretend it’s not so winter outside.
