Ah, we’re finally to the season where layering is fun. You don’t have to put on the big puffy coat yet, but you do need a few fall jackets to top your outfits with. Whether it’s over a sweater or tee, a long duster is the classic transitional fall coat that will keep you warm, even when winter heads your way (Can we just skip winter, though?).

While there are a ton of different duster coat and jacket styles out there, I prefer one with more structure, which I think adds polish to jeans and a tee. I like that it can be layered with a scarf, gloves and a hat when temperatures dip, too. Grey and black are your best options because they literally go with everything, but I say go crazy with textures. This wool one is fabulous because it adds a hint of dimension to your outfit without clashing with anything.

Also, let’s talk about length for a second. Preferably, your transitional fall coat will be as long as possible, stopping about a foot or a little less from your feet. (All my petite girls, don’t worry–I’m 5’2″ and this works on me. It’s actually an elongating silhouette.) That ensures plenty of coverage when you need warmth, and also a cool floaty moment when the wind hits it just right. Wear it open now, and bundled up later. I’ll be wearing mine alllll fall and winter, for sure.
