It’s that time of year again, and the YMLL household is all decorated for the Christmas season. We (ahem, Rich) hauled our tree pretty far this year, but we didn’t have to take an Uber!! Yay for saving money for presents! Last year I had a lot of questions from you guys on how I go about decorating my tree in a simple, chic way that’s still affordable, so I thought, why not break it down in a blog post for you guys. Most of my secret to stylish christmas tree decorations is Target. I always drag Rich there to (again) haul things back to our place for me. They have such a tasteful variety of decorations that I never have trouble finding what I want to create the perfect tree. Beyond that, here’s what I do:
Yes, red and green are traditional for Christmas, but metallics are just as joyful, and they work with every style of decor. Start with a real tree or a natural looking faux version, and string on white lights. From there, I like to build with neutral metallic golds, silvers, browns and everything in between.
Christmas trees that are covered with the same round ornaments tend to look flat. Using different sizes and shapes of ornaments helps to add dimension. I usually look for variety packs.
SHOP STYLISH ORNAMENT VARIETY PACKS:
I usually skip garland because I feel like it’s a little too garish. Instead, I’ll grab some wide ribbon from the gift aisle and wrap it around the tree. This year, I went a different route by cutting the ribbon into short strips and tying bows on the branches. I love this silver ribbon, which has a copper trim.
Christmas is about family and friends, so you have to have some pieces on your tree that are personal to you. I’ve peppered in a few of these onto my tree. Hallmark Mary’s Angel series ornaments, because my mom got me one every year for Christmas. The Oklahoma! musical ornament, which plays “Oh What A Beautiful Morning.” Why? Rich and I met in high school when we were both playing leads in this musical (yeah, we are totally theatre nerds at heart). And of course, it wouldn’t be merry without a National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation ornament.
I like to use some festive items that aren’t found in an ornament box, which makes the tree seem more unique. This year I found silver and gold jingle bells and strung twine through them to create musical little ornaments.
If you were starting to think it, I don’t have anything against color! In fact, a small dose at the bottom of the tree helps to anchor things. I like a dark plaid tree skirt (that’s extra soft for pets like my little dachshund Speedy to lay under).
As much as holiday decorating like the McCallister or Griswold house (aka Christmas AF) is…

Hey, any Christmas tree is awesome! We always had like 50 million ornaments on ours at my family’s place when I was younger. My brother, sister and I each had our own box of ornaments that we added to the tree – A lot of them homemade from when we were little.
Glad that you like the tips. 🙂

Thanks Amber! Generally, Target is the best for holiday decorations. I feel like their balance of taste/price is awesome. Where do you shop for your holiday decor?

Thanks Arianne! I think it adds more dimension, and makes it more fun, while still keeping things cohesive. I can’t wait to get my tree up this year! And we have a car this year, so we won’t have to lug it home. LOL
