Living in NYC has its challenges when it comes to the size of your living space, especially in the bathroom. Heck, most apartments have small bathrooms no matter where the location. This bathroom revamp was done in BF’s and my apartment. We don’t have a linen closet to hide everything away in, but with a few small tweaks, it looks organized and perfectly accessorized. They say the bedroom is the sanctuary, but when you live in a small apartment, the bathroom is the only place you truly get alone time. Here are my surefire multipurpose ways on how to organize your bathroom as well as decorate the space. Goodbye bantam bathroom, hello lavish lavatory.
Build Up
It goes without saying that you have to create space vertically by adding shelves. I placed them above the toilet, being sure to measure the length and width of the wall before buying, as well as how deep the shelf is. You want to have plenty of space on it to fit things like towels. I like the clean look of floating wall shelves, which don’t take up (precious) space or look clunky like a traditional shelving unit.

Unify Your Linens
If you’re displaying your towels and washcloths, choose one print that is either neutral or coordinates with your color scheme. I like that my striped towels add a pop of print without being too loud.

Box It Up
Anything large, like washcloths, toiletries, charging cords, hand towels, toilet paper, soap and extra loofas can be tidied up by placing them in baskets. Roll up the cloths & towels to make them look decorative and stack your TP. When choosing baskets, shoot for neutral colors again. Don’t worry, you’ll add some pops of color with a few well placed accessories.
Divide & Conquer
Don’t sweat the small stuff when thinking about how to organize your bathroom. Use a divided container to organize your prettier, more decorative toiletries and makeup. I like to reuse the bottles of fancier packaged bath salts, etc. Usually I’ll keep the bottle and refill it with the affordable (ugly packaged) stuff when I run out. For other things like hair accessories, cotton balls and cotton swabs, use small decorative containers that double as accessories.
Accessorize Smartly
Because you don’t have much room to work with, most decorative accessories should serve a purpose. Candles and a cute box of matches (again, totally reusable) can keep the space smelling fresh, while a soap dispenser and your favorite fragrance near the sink make functional sense. I also avoid matching sets for accessories. Choosing pieces that are in similar neutral color families, but have different styles make for visual interest.
Soup Up Your Shower
First things first, your shower curtain should remain neutral. No bold fancy colors in a small bathroom. It’s just too much for the eye. Secondly, there’s nothing that makes a shower area look more cluttered than random bottles in different packaging. Again, keep the nicely packaged ones out for display on a tray, but for the others, get coordinating resealable glass or plastic bottles in some colors. It’s super easy to just pour in your shampoo, body wash, etc. I usually mark which is which with a permanent marker or a little paint.
